Throughout her adventure, Minli and Dragon meet many more people, each helping her along as she tries to find the Old Man of the Moon. Minli, feeling sorry for Dragon, befriends the giant animal and continues on her quest with a new companion. After coming to life from the painting, Dragon lived in the forest for many years alone, without the ability to fly. The Magistrate demanded the painting, but the painter purposefully painted Dragon walking around the ground, so he could never fly.

Dragon, as he came to be known, came to life from a painting received by the evil Magistrate Tiger. The first character she meets is a dragon who cannot fly living in the forest beyond the Fruitless Mountain. On her quest, Minli meets several characters who help her find the Old Man of the Moon. Minli, determined to provide her family a better life, goes on an incredible adventure to find the Old Man of the Moon, who lives in the Never Ending Mountain, to ask him how to change her parents fortune. Minli’s father, Ba, is quite the story teller and he tells Minli the story of the Old Man of the Moon, who has the power to answer any question in the world by reading from the Book of Fortune. After seeing her family struggle year after year, Minli wants to help change her parents fortune. Minli comes from a relatively poor family who can barely harvest enough crops to feed themselves and have to work tirelessly day in and day out to survive. The story focuses on young Minli who lives in the Village of Fruitless Mountain. Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a wonderful adventure for all ages.
